And now I can hear you breathing
And now I can smell your fear
I can't wait now 'cause I'm seething
I'll make you my souvenir
And now I can smell your fear
I can't wait now 'cause I'm seething
I'll make you my souvenir
Dawn filtered through sheer black curtains, revealing floating dust motes that traversed lazily toward the floor. Dante sat upon the edge of his unmade bed, pulling heavy leather hunting boots on. He tried his best to be quiet, knowing Nicholae would scold his ear off if he knew of his plans. The two had grown up together and knew each other's brains inside and out so there would be no hiding his intentions if Nicholae found him. He had dressed quickly that morning, in his customary black leather light armor. He was a swift fighter and stayed away from the heavier plate armors that would slow him down. His destination this morning was the Tanglewood border.
Escaping the castle, Dante grabbed his horse Skellige, a creature that resembled a monster more than a horse. The creature was black as the shadows in the Tanglewood and had pupil-less eyes that burned white like the sun. His ears were elongated and thin atop a head that was more skeleton than flesh. His mouth split his face back to his cheek and ended in a muzzle with sharp fanged canines. The animal had little love for anything in the world and could only be commanded by Dante and his father, the latter of which had been forcefully removed from the mortal coil.
Dante left the castle ground through the back gate, leaving the black obsidian castle behind him. It towered over the open plain before him, ominous and shining black, built into the side of the mountains. It was his father's castle, ruled by his father before him. Dante had come into his sovereignty in an unusual way. Typically one would be married before assuming the throne, and therefore the title of king, but he had been an exception. Thus he was a prince with a king's responsibilities and rights.
Dante set a course for the Tanglewood with the intent to reach its border. The border which also sat at the edge of the Void. There was a war stirring in the demon realms, the likes of which had not been seen in many generations. Unrest in the human realms often meant a backlash in the demon realms as well. With demons being summoned out of their homes left and right, the king of the Void saw an opportunity to overtake land that was not his. Dante's father responded, quickly assembling a small army to meet the Void on the field. Dante had been left at home, as demon children were rare and hard to conceive and Dante was his only heir. In an unprecedented move, the king of the Void brought his son, Prince Ashallyn into battle with him. Against the two castle-trained warriors and their shadow tricks, Dante's father had little chance and fell to the prince.
Dante had no intention of letting this grudge go. At the edge of the Tanglewood, he looked down the cliffside to where the border of the Void began. It was a long expanse of white, highly contrasted to the black of the Shadow Realm. The castle was too far in the distance to be seen, but the white mist that covered the whole of the Void was all he needed for his temper to be incensed. He thought of his father's sword strapped diagonally across his back and how he had every intention to end the regency of the Void with that blade.
Dante climbed out of the saddle and sat under a nearby tree. Skellige obediently stood nearby, the creature quiet and calm.
